Healthcare and Politics – What’s Going On?!

With all of the news about Healthcare in the political arena today, we wanted to highlight some of the issues that may be on the forefront of the discussions.

Universal Healthcare

You may have heard the terms Medicare for all and Universal healthcare as possible solutions.  One thing is for sure, how to fund those solutions has not been resolved.  While the idea may sound appealing, higher taxes and the expenses to businesses is not something that most politicians like to mention.  However, unless someone can come up with other possible solutions, the discussions will continue without any real solutions to the issue.

Short-term Insurance

Another hot topic is short-term health insurance plans.  These are on the chopping block by California politicians.  For the most part, it is most likely due to the potential loss in premiums from the young and healthy people currently on an ACA (Affordable Care Act) plan through Covered California.  These types of plans offer consumers options and removing those options could ultimately leave people without insurance when they need it.

Repealing the Affordable Care Act

One last issue is the push to repeal the health insurance tax, a provision of the ACA (Affordable Care Act).  This is complicated and there are many discussions on the pros and cons to this issue.  Some say it would add an enormous tax burden to consumers and businesses if the tax is to remain. Others say it could potentially place other healthcare programs as risk from federal spending cuts.

While we do not anticipate a real solution in the near future, it would be wise to keep informed on these issues as they will impact everyone.
